Akira Satake will lead a hands-on hand building workshop (with some wheel throwing demonstration) sharing techniques he uses in the making of his tea ceremony bowls, yunomi, sake vessels, tea pots, ikebana vases, and sculptural objects.
Participants will learn to create rich surfaces inspired by the natural world. Techniques will include:
1) brushing kohiki slip on clay slabs and stretching the slabs to crack and distort the surfaces.
2) mixing air and other materials into the clay body and then tearing off the clay and/or cutting with a wire to create the shapes.
3) applying a coating of clay onto the surface of wheel thrown pieces and then altering them. (Demonstration only)
Akira will also share his experience and knowledge in a discussion of the Japanese aesthetic. Participants will gain insight in finding the beauty in imperfection, the meaning of "wabi-sabi," and the importance of "ma" -- the space in between.
Open to all levels of experience.
Class limit: 16 people. $600 + $75 (lab fee)

*We are going to require that all participants be fully vaccinated* -- Our studio space is 2000 sq ft with ventilation and very high ceilings, located on the ground floor with access to outdoor work space, so I think we will all feel comfortable.
